Allergy testing

Allergy testing identifies allergens, like mold, pet dander, bee stings and peanuts, that can cause allergies. During a skin prick test, a healthcare provider introduces allergens into your skin to check for a wheal (raised mark), rash or other reactions.Allergy tests measure your body’s response to specific allergy triggers or allergens. If you have an allergy, your immune system overreacts.

Skin prick test

Skin prick testing is an allergy test used to identify allergens responsible for triggering symptoms in allergic diseases. Whilst patch testing is a useful diagnostic test for patients with allergic contact dermatitis

The gold standard for allergy testing is as simple as pricking your skin, inserting a small amount of a substance, and waiting to see what happens. If you’re allergic to the substance, a reddish, elevated bump with a red ring around it will appear. This bump may be severely itchy.

Dermal patch test

Patch testing is undertaken for the investigation and confirmation of substances that produce allergic contact dermatitis. During patch testing, different substances are placed on the skin and taped in place. The patches are typically placed on the back, left on for 2 days and then removed. The area of skin that was tested will be evaluated by the dermatologist 2 to 4 days after the patches are removed.

Blood tests for allergies

Allergy blood tests detect and measure the amount of allergen-specific antibodies in your blood. When you come into contact with an allergy trigger, known as an allergen, your body makes antibodies against it.

The antibodies tell cells in your body to release certain chemicals. These chemicals are what cause allergy symptoms

Food challenge test

A food challenge test can be used to determine if a food allergy exists or to confirm a suspected food allergy. After you eat the suspected offending food or take a capsule, you are monitored to see if a reaction occurs.

Samples of the suspected offending food may be eaten on its own or mixed with another food. Sometimes the food may be disguised in a capsule. These food preparation techniques are used to prevent undue influence on the outcome of the test

Drug challenge test

In a drug challenge test a patient is administered a drug to watch if it causes a reaction. Allergy to drugs is studied with skin or blood tests, but the results of these are not always conclusive. Also, skin and blood tests are not available for all drugs. Thus, sometimes the doctor will suggest performing a drug challenge test. This may be done to ascertain that the patient is allergic and must avoid the drug, or to assess if the drug is tolerated and the patient can receive it. Sometimes it is used to assess tolerance to an alternative drug

Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy is a type of cancer treatment that helps your immune system fight cancer. The immune system helps your body fight infections and other diseases. It is made up of white blood cells and organs and tissues of the lymph system.

Immunotherapy is a type of biological therapy. Biological therapy is a type of treatment that uses substances made from living organisms to treat cancer.

Desensitization of allergen

Allergen immunotherapy works like a vaccination. In fact, the new term for desensitization & Immunotherapy is Allergy vaccination. Through your body's exposure to small, injected amounts of a particular allergen, in gradually increasing doses, your body builds up immunity to the allergen(s) to which you are allergic.

The objective of immunotherapy is to gradually build the body’s tolerance to an allergen in order to reduce the overproduction of immunoglobulin E, which plays an essential role in hypersensitivity. The intent is to steer the body away from humoral immunity – which involves the release of antibodies to attack the allergen – and towards cell immunity.

Respiratory physiotherapy for dysfunctional breathing

Dysfunctional breathing is described as chronic or recurrent changes in breathing pattern causing respiratory and non-respiratory symptoms.

Respiratory physiotherapy is a broad term used in research that incorporates physiotherapy treatment techniques that address the removal of secretion and improve airway clearance thereby help to improve respiratory efficiency.Respiratory physiotherapy is the term for a group of treatments designed to eliminate secretions, thus helping to decrease work of breathing, promote the expansion of the lungs, and prevent the lungs from collapse.
